About SheRNI

She Research Network in India (SheRNI) is the expert profile network system that connects and leverages the knowledge, skills, and expertise of women across various fields in India. This system aims to empower women by providing opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing. The objectives of this project are to create a national-level expert profile system for women faculty members and facilitate the exchange of expertise, insights, and experiences among women experts in diverse fields.

The system supports the women scientists/faculty members to build a strong professional network that fosters collaboration, mentorship, and career advancement opportunities. The SheRNI expert network system serves as a dynamic platform for women professionals to connect, collaborate, and empower each other, ultimately contributing to the advancement of women in various fields.

Savitribai Jyotirao Phule

Savitribai Phule was one of the first female teachers in India, a social reformer, and a poet. Along with her husband, Jyotiba Phule, in Maharashtra, she played a vital role in improving women's rights in India. She is considered to be the pioneer of India's feminist movement. She strived to abolish discrimination and unfair treatment of people based on caste and gender. She and her husband were pioneers of women's education in India. They started their first school for girls in 1848 in Pune at Tatyasaheb Bhide's residence or Bhidewada.

Lakshmibai Newalkar

Lakshmibai Newalkar, the Rani of Jhansi or Jhansi ki Rani widely known as Rani Lakshmibai born Manikarnika Tambe; 19 November 1828 — 18 June 1858 was the Maharani consort of the princely state of Jhansi in the Maratha Empire from 1843 to 1853 by marriage to Maharaja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar. She was one of the leading figures in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, who became a national hero and symbol of resistance to the British rule in India for Indian nationalists.

Rajeshwari Chatterjee

Rajeshwari Chatterjee (24 January 1922 – 3 September 2010) was an Indian scientist and an academic. She was the first woman engineer from Karnataka and described herself as an engineering-scientist. During her tenure at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, Chatterjee was a professor and later chairperson of the department of Electrical Communication Engineering.

Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi

Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi (31 March 1865 – 26 February 1887) was the first Indian female doctor of western medicine. She was the first woman from the erstwhile Bombay presidency of India to study and graduate with a two-year degree in western medicine in the United States. She was also referred to as Anandibai Joshi and Anandi Gopal Joshi (where Gopal came from Gopalrao, her husband's first name)

Lakshmi Sahgal

Lakshmi Sahgal (born Lakshmi Swaminathan; 24 October 1914 – 23 July 2012) was a revolutionary of the Indian independence movement, an officer of the Indian National Army, and the Minister of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind government. Lakshmi is commonly referred to in India as Captain Lakshmi, a reference to her rank when taken prisoner in Burma during the Second World War.

Usha Mehta

Usha Mehta (25 March 1920 – 11 August 2000) was a Gandhian and independence activist of India. She is also remembered for organizing the Congress Radio, also called the Secret Congress Radio, an underground radio station, which functioned for few months during the Quit India Movement of 1942. In 1998, the Government of India conferred on her Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of the Republic of India.

Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla (17 March 1962 – 1 February 2003) was an Indian-born American astronaut and aerospace engineer who was the first woman of Indian origin to fly to space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator aboard STS-87. Chawla's second flight was in 2003 on STS-107, the final flight of Columbia. She was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the spacecraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on 1 February 2003.

Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali (16 July 1909 – 29 July 1996) was an Indian educator, political activist, and publisher. An active participant in the Indian independence movement, she is widely remembered for hoisting the Indian National flag at the Gowalia Tank maidan, Bombay during the Quit India Movement in 1942. Post-independence, she remained active in politics, becoming Delhi's first Mayor.

Chandramukhi Basu

Chandramukhi Basu (1860 – 3 February 1944), a Bengali from Dehradun, which was located in the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh), was one of the first two female graduates of the British India. In 1882, along with Kadambini Ganguly, she passed the examination of the bachelor's degree in arts (BA) from University of Calcutta. Their formal degrees were handed during the convocation of the university in 1883.

Kadambini Bose Ganguly

Dr. Kadambini Bose Ganguly (18 July 1861 – 3 October 1923) was the first female medical doctor in India. She and Anandibai Joshi both got their degree in Western medicine in 1886. However, She was India's first practicing lady doctor as Anandibai died soon after. She was the first Indian woman to have practiced with a modern medicine degree. Ganguly was the first woman to gain admission to Calcutta Medical College in 1884, subsequently trained in Scotland, and established a successful medical practice in India. She was the first woman speaker in the Indian National Congress.

Sarla Thukral

Sarla Thukral (8 August 1914 – 15 March 2008) was among the first Indian women to fly aircraft. Born in 1914, she earned an aviation pilot license in 1936 at the age of 21 and flew a Gypsy Moth solo. After obtaining the initial license, she persevered and completed one thousand hours of flying in the aircraft owned by the Lahore Flying Club. Her husband, P. D. Sharma, whom she married at 16 and who came from a family which had nine pilots, encouraged her.

Cornelia Sorabji

Cornelia Sorabji (1866–1954) was India’s first female lawyer and the first woman to study law at Oxford. She broke gender barriers in both education and the legal profession, advocating for the rights of secluded women (purdahnashins) and assisting hundreds with legal matters. A pioneer in women’s education and legal reform, her work laid the foundation for future generations of women in law, despite her conservative stance on nationalism and social change.
